AMS President Responds to Ubyssey Editorials
The letter that follows is AMS President Bijan Ahmadian’s response to editorials that originally appeared in the Ubyssey newspaper:
- Wanted: Democracy and local government for UBC-area residents (July 19, 2010)
- Governance at UBC: The UNA responds (July 23, 2010)
Bill 20: A promising first step for UBC students.
I was surprised to read the opinion piece by Metro Vancouver Chair Lois Jackson calling Metro’s unilaterally developed bylaws for UBC “progress toward increasing accountability,” especially given that those bylaws would have moved control of UBC’s institutional land to a body on which the Alma Mater Society (AMS), the official student society of UBC Vancouver, has no formal representation. When those proposed bylaws were announced last fall, AMS Council responded quite forcefully.
New SUB Project Design Cube
In April, 2008, UBC students approved the construction of a new Student Union Building with an AMS-run, campus-wide referendum. In June of this year, the AMS announced that HBBH+BH is the architect firm for the New SUB Project.
To ensure students are engaged in the process, the AMS and HBBH+BH will be running workshops and charettes on various topics. Be sure to check out the design cube (working office) in the south alcove of the SUB, opening on Friday, September 10th. The design cube will act as a transparent base of operations during the crucial early design stages. It will be open Monday to Friday until the end of April, 2011.
