The AMS Safety Coordinator is your student representative and advocate responsible for addressing safety issues on campus.
AMS Safety Coordinator’s portfolio deals explicitly with safety concerns and the well-being of all students. This portfolio is divided into two mutually constitutive areas dealing with safety concerns: one being the “overt” issues of physical safety such as personal preparedness and overall emergency response procedures etc.; the second being the “covert” issues of mental and emotional safety such as forms of discrimination and oppression based on race, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender, sexual diversity, etc.
Please do not hesitate to contact the AMS Safety Coordinator if you have any questions or concerns.

We also have connections with many on and off-campus resources, so if we can’t help you, we can refer you to someone who can.
The AMS Finance Commission deals with all the financial matters of your students’ society
The AMS Finance Commission (FinCom) deals with all financial matters of your students’ society, including financial aid campaigns for students, and internal AMS groups (clubs, constituencies, and resource groups). The Finance Commission is composed of:
Elin Tayyar (chair)
Vice-President Finance
vpfinance@ams.ubc.ca
Andrew Walker
Associate Vice-President Finance
avpfinance@ams.ubc.ca
Edwin Chan
Financial Orientations Coordinator
finorientations@ams.ubc.ca
Gift items, school supplies, greeting cards, postcards, tickets for AMS events, and UBC gear — The Outpost is your one-stop shopping spot in the SUB.
Located on the Main Concourse of the SUB, you’ll find a great supply of school supplies, funky greeting cards, postcards, gifts, and UBC gear to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The Outpost also sells transit tickets and passes.
The Outpost has replaced the AMS Box Office and now offers tickets to shows put on by AMS events, as well as to other events.
Other services include:
The Students’ Union Building offers complete conference services under one roof and is conveniently located walking distance to UBC accommodations and all University amenities and facilities.
If you looking for a place to live, or have a place to rent, AMS Rentsline’s web-based system can help connect you.
The External Commission (XCom) works with the VP external to plan, prioritize, and put into action directives for the upcoming year.
This year the External Commission, which has historically been composed of five part-time students, has been reduced to a single, more work-intensive associate vice-president position. If you care about the decisions that governments are making and how they affect students, then you should think about getting involved with the external portfolio. Even if you don’t care about the decisions they’re making, you’re still affected by them. Tuition prices are continuing to rise and the average student debt upon graduation is at an all-time high of $26,000. Without active student pressure, our situation will continue to get worse.
The following is a preliminary list of goals that we want to accomplish over the next few months:
- Organizing free weekly Cinema Politica movie showings on social issues at the Norm Theatre;
- Organizing a biweekly Speakers Series with important decision makers on topics such as transportation, the cost of education, housing, student loans, and UBC governance;
- Researching and writing an AMS position paper on the cost of education;
- Researching and writing an AMS position paper on how UBC is governed;
- Preparing an advertising and awareness campaign for the upcoming elections;
- Undergoing a TransLink service review;
- Undergoing U-Pass contract negotiations;
- Liaising with other student unions in the Lower Mainland to build working relationships;
- Holding biweekly student forums to get your input on policies and event planning. (Email avpexternal@ams.ubc.ca to get on the mailing list; )
- Building a website that will act as a centralized resource for students who want to know the latest news in post-secondary education and get involved with the AMS’s lobbying efforts. For now, check out our blog.
We’d love to hear from you if you have suggestions on what more we should be doing. Please email either myself or Tim Chu if you have an interest in helping us work towards our goals or just want some more information.

If you feel that you have been treated unfairly or need to approach the University or AMS to resolve a conflict, the AMS Ombudsperson can assist you.
The Ombudsperson acts impartially, is independent of any administrative body, and provides a confidential service. If you have a problem and are not sure where to turn, the AMS Ombudsperson can point you in the right direction.
What is the AMS Ombuds Office?
The AMS Ombuds Office is committed to assisting students and AMS staff by providing conflict resolution services. Some of our services include:
- Providing conflict management services to AMS clubs and constituencies undergoing internal conflicts;
- Facilitating and negotiating resolutions between students and the University;
- Receiving and investigating complaints about the Alma Mater Society;
- Preparing students for meeting with University representatives;
- Helping students with appeals;
- Providing conflict resolution workshops;
- Advising students about their options and resources.
How Do I Request the Assistance of the Ombuds Office?
To serve you effectively, we need to understand your situation. A set of instructions has been carefully devised to guide you in preparing a written statement. First, however, let us offer these other valuable resources that may better cater to your needs.
If you feel emotionally distressed and in need of immediate assistance, please contact AMS Speakeasy and ask to speak with a Peer Counselor. A Peer Counselor will lend a sympathetic easy and help you organize your thoughts. They will also refer you to other resources. The Speakeasy desk is at the North end of the SUB Concourse and can reached at 604-822-3700. More information is also available online.
For issues of transportation, safety and security, please contact Campus Security at: 604-822-2222. To send an incident report, and to see other security services that are offered, please visit www.security.ubc.ca. To report a crime, call 911.
For academic issues an Academic Advisor is the first person you should contact. Look up your Faculty or School in the UBC Calendar for information about academic regulation and to get academic advice.
The UBC Equity Office works to prevent discrimination and harassment on campus and handles complaints when they occur. UBC students, faculty, and staff are welcome to bring their human rights concerns to the Equity Office for consultation. The Equity Office can be reached at 604-822-6353 and www.equity.ubc.ca.
If none of these seems appropriate or you would rather deal with the AMS Ombuds office, please visit our office or file an appeal online.
How does the AMS Ombuds Office Operate?
From our perspective, a student files a grievance of an unmet need. While a student’s need may be met through negotiating a new arrangement with an authority (i.e a mutually acceptable resolution), alternative means to negotiation are also explored. We are committed to concluding cases in a timely manner and rely on the commitment of all the parties involved to do so. The office is daily from Monday to Friday and is accessible to students via the office, e-mail, and telephone. The operation pillars of the Ombuds Office are confidentiality, independence, and impartiality.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality in the Ombuds Office extends to all parties coming in contact with the office, including students, the University, and the AMS.
Independence
The Ombudsperson reports directly to AMS Council and operates independently of any administrative body at the University.
Impartiality
The office does not advocate for students, nor is its mandate to defend the policies or authorities at the AMS and the University. We work to promote understanding. In the case of any conflict of interest issues, the office has internal policies to deal with these matters.
The UBC senate is the governing body on all University academic matters. Student currently comprise 17 of the 85 senate members.
The senate is the governing body on all University academic matters. They have the following responsibilities:
- Determine admission and exam policy;
- Hear student appeals in matters of academic discipline, academic standing, and admissions;
- Approve, recommend, and revise courses;
- Provide and grant degrees;
- Recommend the creation of faculties, departments, courses, and scholarships;
- Advise and assist the president in University budget matters;
- Make recommendations to the Board of Governors.
Student representatives comprise 17 of the 85 Senate members. In addition to attending Senate meetings, they sit on a variety of University committees that oversee the above matters.
You are highly encouraged to attend senate meetings.Senate is held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in the Law Building (Room 102). See the senate website for more details.
The student senate typically meets in AMS council chambers at 6:00 p.m. before senate meetings. Anyone is welcome to attend — we are here to voice your concerns to senate — although it is wise to contact the senate student caucus chair in advance.
If you would like to make your voice heard on academic decisions, or if you have any questions relating to the senate, feel free to contact your faculty representative.
The UBC Board of Governors determines most aspects of life at UBC, and has two student elected representatives.
BOG is the ultimate determiner of most aspects of life at UBC that affect students:
- Tuition policy;
- Budget allocation;
- Building development on campus;
- Landscaping and maintenance of facilities;
- The university budget;
- And long-term planning.
The Board of Governors
- Is responsible for all non-academic matters at UBC and is the highest level decision-making body on campus;
- Is composed of 21 volunteers: the chancellor, the president, and 11 provincial appointees; two faculty members, one staff member and two full-time students elected at UBC-V; and one faculty member, one staff member and one student elected at UBC-O.
- Board meetings are held five times annually, and run about six to eight hours each; the morning sessions are usually open to the public. Board standing committees meet about one week earlier and are also partially open to the public.
Michael Duncan and Bijan Ahmadian were elected by the student body last January to be this year’s student representatives on BOG.
If you want to find about more about BOG or exactly what your BOG reps do, send them an email at bog@ams.ubc.ca.
See http://www.bog.ubc.ca for more details.
Each of the student associations and undergraduate societies of the degree granting faculties and schools of UBC have their own elected councils and executives, and are represented at AMS council.
These are the student associations and undergraduate societies of the degree granting faculties and schools of UBC. Every constituency gets at least one seat on the AMS Council, and one extra seat for every 1,500 students. Constituencies have their own elected councils and can assist students with the day to day concerns and issues specific to their school or faculty. They also put on special events and are a great way to get involved at university. Contact your constituency today to see what they have to offer.

Administering the AMS, as one of the best and largest student associations around, requires a lot of work. The AMS Executive and Student Council are just the tip of the iceberg that is your student government.
How these services are administered, however, is decided by AMS Council, a group of elected student representatives that gather twice a month to decided on the inner workings of the students’ society. Things like the student health plan, changes to the SUB, and what to do with the over $8-million AMS budget are decided by Council.
As a member of a faculty (such as arts or science), you’re entitled to vote in your undergraduate society elections. Every undergrad society is represented on council by the AMS representative you vote in, so it’s important to know who they are and to contact them if you have any concerns.
Take a look at the two British Columbia laws that apply to student government:
University Act
Society Act

The AMS, through Volunteer Connect, can match your skills and goals to a volunteer position at in the AMS. Don’t think about graduating without this valuable experience.
Do you have vision but lack the funding to see it through? Then the Innovative Projects Fund may be the opportunity to make your vision a reality.
What is it?
The Innovative Projects Fund (IPF) is an annual donation made by the AMS to the University in an effort to aid the enrichment and progressive development of the campus community. The IPF was designed to provide a start-up funding pool for a broad range of visible and innovative projects of direct benefit to students. Traditionally, each successful application receives funding ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. In the past, innovative projects have been new ideas such as student media initiatives, new clubs, new conferences, and student services.All UBC students, staff and faculty who have a vision for a new project that does not duplicate existing resources are encouraged to apply. For a list of previously funded projects, please click here.
How do I apply?
Download and complete the IPF application form. Paper copies of the application are available in Room 238 of the Student Union Building.Due to the number of applications submitted, the IPF Adjudication Committee requests the submissions be limited to a maximum of four pages. It would be helpful if applications could be phrased in a language that a non-specialist would understand. Applications for projects requiring ongoing support should clearly indicate sources of future funding.
Criteria & Eligibility
Projects must be innovative, provide benefit to a significant number of students, and be visible to the campus community. Applications will be accepted from students, staff, and faculty at the University.Selection Process
A six-member committee comprised of three student representatives (appointed by the AMS Council), three representatives from the University administration, and chaired by the AMS president will evaluate the applications and forward their recommendations to the president of the University. Following approval, the chair will notify all applicants. In consideration of conflict of interest, committee members will be required to abstain from participation in the consideration of applications originating from their own department/faculty. Successful project applicants will be informed in early 2008.Selected Proposals
Applicants will be required to submit a report detailing the progress of their project within 12 months of the disbursement of IPF funds. Applicants re-applying for funding must submit their report along with their application. Project funding will normally not exceed three years. Equipment purchased with IPF funds becomes the property of the University. Any funds from the sale of equipment will be returned to the IPF.Deadline
Deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, October 23, 2009.Please send completed applications to:

The AMS Art Gallery is an opportunity for UBC and non-UBC students to showcase their work with numerous showings including local artists and exhibitions of the visual art department’s class projects.
The Alma Mater Society Art Gallery is a great opportunity for UBC students and non-UBC students to showcase and promote their work. Located on the main floor of the Students’ Union Building in the southwest corner, the space has been an art gallery for more than 20 years.
Opened in 1982 as an on-campus site for students and local artists to exhibit their work, the AMS Art Gallery supports all exhibitions in the field of contemporary art. The gallery provides a venue for UBC’s fine arts program, as well as serving students, researchers, and the public on local and national levels.
In addition to the weekly exhibitions, the gallery also houses its own art collection, started in 1940; it now includes 67 pieces, which provides students and the public with a historical record of growth and change in contemporary Canadian art.
If you are interested in exhibiting your work please contact the Gallery at sacart@ams.ubc.ca.
Firstweek is your first chance to forge a social connection with 2,000 other first-years during a full week of events.
So, Firstweek you say?
You’ve heard all about this “Firstweek” thing, and you want to know more. Well, here at AMS Firstweek, we remind you that you’ll never forget your first time! What is Firstweek? Well, Firstweek is your first chance to forge a social connection with 2,000 other first-years at our week of events, a festivus of fun times, a regalia of rockin’ out, a gala of greatness…you get the idea.
Firstweek jams a whole whack of campus (and some off-campus) activities into one week designed at getting first-years to form those important social bonds that will (hopefully) last for the rest of their experience here at UBC. Firstweek also serves as a giant “welcome back” to those who have done and seen it all before, with 19+ events designed to bring the good times!
Yeah, sounds good, but why should I go?
Because you want a chance to meet your future best friends. Because you want to experience all of what this massive, beautiful campus has to offer. Because the idea of running around yelling at the top of your lungs appeals to you. Because nothing says “romantic” like a kiss under the stars at our dance party. Because you want to find out more about UBC clubs/services like Improv, Athletics, Rec, and various volunteer opportunities. Because you want to bleed Thunderbird blue. *
Because Firstweek is simply the most FUN you’ll have on campus, all year, for the least amount of money. Because you can’t put a price tag on friendship, but you can put a Firstweek wristband around it!
*— Don’t worry, you won’t actually bleed at our events. Well, hopefully not.
Now you’re talking my language. How do I make this happen?
I thought you’d never ask. It’s such an easy process, you might fall out of your chair, or allow your pet fish, Rocky, to do it for you. Check out our Events page. If you see a few things that appeal to you, show up to them and pay the admission fee listed on the Events page. Or, if you’re awesome and know it, then go to the REGISTER ME! page and find out the details on how to sign up for a Firstweek wristband, which grants you access to ALL Firstweek events, discounts on Athletics events, discounts on concert tickets, and the best campus experience out there for a new OR returning student.
Not only that, the wristbands are royal purple, the color of kings and queens. It’s not an accident.

Movies and screenings at student-friendly prices!
The Norm Theatre, located on the Main Concourse of the Student Union Building (next to Bernoulli’s Bagels) is home to current movies, independent films, screenings, and special events including conferences and lectures.
To find out what’s showing weekly, visit the Filmsoc website. Admission is $4.00 (regular) or $2.00 (FilmSoc members and children ages 3-13).
About the Norm Theatre
The official name of the Norm is the Normand Bouchard Memorial AMS Theatre. The name was officially bestowed on it by a meeting of the AMS Student Administrative Commission (SAC), the student body that oversees the SUB.
The name was bestowed in November 1995 to honour Normand Bouchard, a long-time member and executive of the AMS Film Society (Filmsoc) who had died earlier that year. Before that, the auditorium was just referred to as the SUB Auditorium. The Norm dates back to the original construction of the SUB in 1968.
As organizers of the ever popular Welcome Back BBQ, a host of concerts and speakers, AMS Events takes play seriously. Visit their pages to find out what’s coming up or to access their services to help make your event successful.
Unlimited public transit access for UBC students.
The U-Pass Program is an integrated comprehensive transportation package that provides students with universal, accessible, and affordable access to public transit and other sustainable transportation programs. It is a mandatory program for all members of the Alma Mater Society (AMS) and costs $23.75/month. This program was initially approved via student referendum in February 2003, and re-approved in February 2005 and again in March 2008.

The AMS Food Bank provides emergency food relief to current UBC students.
About the Food Bank
The UBC/AMS Student Food Bank provides emergency food relief to current UBC students. The initial set up of the food bank was funded by the AMS through the Innovative Projects Fund. With their support, and that of the AMS executive coordinator of student services, UBC Ismaili Students Association, and UBC Red Cross Club, the Student Food Bank was launched Feb. 2005.Mandate:
- To provide a seven-day supply of emergency food relief for current UBC students;
- To provide nutritionally-sound hampers in accordance with the Canada Food Guide;
- To educate clients regarding resources available to them on and off campus;
- To provide the most beneficial experience to volunteers;
- To advocate about student hunger and poverty issues.
Using the Food Bank
All UBC students are welcome to use the Student Food Bank by showing a valid student ID card. The Student Food Bank offers dry goods and non-perishable groceries. We often have personal hygiene supplies as well.The UBC/AMS Student Food Bank is meant as an emergency only service, to help students during a time of crisis. To make sure food is available for everyone who needs it, we ask that users limit themselves to one bag of groceries for individuals. There is a limit of six visits per family per semester. Staff will provide referrals to other Lower Mainland food banks and sources of financial assistance if these limits are not meeting your needs. We will not turn anyone away and we want to help.
Please Note: bring your own plastic bags and containers for oil and shampoo.
Donate to the Food Bank
Donations of non-perishable goods will also be accepted during operating hours. Please give generously.
The AMS/GSS Health & Dental Plan is extended health and dental coverage, designed specifically for students to cover expenses not covered by basic health care plans such as prescription drugs, dental care, travel health coverage, health practitioners, vision care, and more.
The Plan was mandated by student referendums in 1999 and 2001. More detailed information about the Plan, including claim forms and details on how to enroll family or opt out, is available at ihaveaplan.ca or at the Health & Dental Plan Office on campus.

B.C. Fair PharmaCare
Who is covered?
All AMS and GSS members who pay AMS fees for the Health & Dental Plan are automatically enrolled, including full and part-time students, international students, and those auditing a course. To verify if you are enrolled in the Health & Dental Plan, check your fee statement and look for the “AMS med/dent fee” line item. You can do this online through the Student Services Portal.
What is covered and how much does it cost?
The Plan includes benefits for prescription drugs, travel health coverage, vision care, health practitioners (including psychologists), dental benefits, and more. The total cost of the Plan is $216.31 per student, included automatically with University fees each Sept. The policy year is from Sept. 1, 2009 to Aug. 31, 2010. Students beginning in Jan. 2010 will be assessed $144.20 for coverage from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2010.
What if I already have health and dental coverage?
If you are covered by another extended plan (i.e. parent or spouse’s employee plan) you can combine both plans to maximize your overall coverage and reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. You may also choose to opt out of the AMS/GSS Plan and have the fee reversed from your student account. All opt outs must be completed within the Change-of-Coverage Period (see below). If it is your first time opting out, you may be asked to provide proof of other coverage. Visit ihaveaplan.ca and follow the on-screen instructions for opting out.
Can I enroll my spouse or dependants?
Yes, students have the option of enrolling their spouse and/or dependent children each year by paying an additional fee, over and above their fee as a member of the AMS/GSS. Common law and same-sex couples are eligible. Visit ihaveaplan.ca and follow the on-screen instructions for enrollments. If you want to cover your spouse or dependants, you must renew your family enrollment during the Change-of-Coverage Period each year (see below for deadlines).
Change-of-Coverage Period
Students can opt out or enroll their family during the following periods only:
- For students starting in September: Sept. 8 to 29, 2009
- For students starting in January: Jan. 4 to 25, 2009 (New winter term two students only)
Blackout Period
Claims processing is delayed while ihaveaplan.ca waits for complete enrollment lists, after opt outs and enrollments have been processed. Claims can be dropped off at the Health & Dental Plan Office, but they will not be processed until the Blackout Period ends. You may also hold your claims until this time. Remember: claims are your responsibility until received by Sun Life. Practitioners and pharmacists can’t accept Pay Direct or assignment of benefits during the Blackout Period.
NEW! Returning eligible students who were covered in 2009’s winter term two will not experience a Blackout Period in winter term one. All other students will have a Blackout Period during the first two months of winter term one. Only new winter term two students will experience a Blackout Period in 2010’s winter term two.
Health Plan Premium Assistance Fund
Partial or full reimbursement of the Health & Dental Plan fee is available on a needs basis from the AMS and GSS. The application for reimbursement requires detailed financial information and is done via the GSS web site (http://www.gss.ubc.ca
Mandatory Health Insurance for new International Students (iMED)
iMED is the mandatory basic health insurance program the University provides for new international students. All new international students are automatically enrolled in the iMED plan, which provides coverage for the three-month waiting period for B.C. MSP or for the entire length of a one-term exchange. Medical benefits include emergency hospitalization and medical services for an unexpected sickness or injury (for the full policy, please visit the website). Once you register for your first class, the fee of $120 (for all students except one-term exchanges students, for whom the fee is $170) will appear on your student account and your card will be sent to you via email; print it and keep it with you at all times. For more details about the iMED policy, coverage dates, opt-out eligibility, addition of dependents, and other related information, please visit the iMED website.
B.C. MSP
In order to claim health benefits under the AMS Health Plan, you must be covered by the B.C. Medical Services Plan (MSP), or have other equivalent basic coverage such as other provincial health care or private basic health insurance. MSP is public health insurance, but most people still have to pay premiums, unless eligible to apply for MSP Premium Assistance (see the web site below for details). Anyone residing in B.C. for longer than six months is required by law to enroll in the B.C. MSP and pay premiums directly to the plan. All residents of B.C. (including international students) are eligible to apply to the MSP, but your application will take three months to process.
There is a waiting period before MSP coverage begins; this is the rest of the month in which you arrive in B.C. plus two months. For example, if you arrive in B.C. on Aug. 25, you will be eligible for MSP on Nov. 1. Be sure to contact MSP within one month after submitting your application to confirm that they received your application.
It is our understanding that any eligible person who submitted an application will be covered after the waiting period, even if their CareCard has not arrived. If this happens to you, you may need to pay at the time you receive health care, keep the receipt, and request reimbursement from MSP once your card arrives.
B.C. MSP: 604-683-7151 or healthservices.gov.bc.ca.
B.C. Fair PharmaCare
B.C. Fair PharmaCare – register and save money!
With Fair PharmaCare, students now have access to the second most generous drug coverage in the country! The B.C. government introduced Fair PharmaCare to replace the PharmaCare program and improve the health status of residents across the province. The income-based program is designed to provide fair access to coverage for prescription drugs – the lower your income, the more assistance the government will provide toward your eligible drug costs. For example, if your net income from two years ago was less than $15,000 and you have registered for Fair PharmaCare, you will have 70 per cent of your eligible prescription drug costs covered immediately, with no deductible.
All B.C. residents are eligible for Fair PharmaCare and all AMS/GSS Plan members should register for the program.
Five good reasons why you should register for Fair PharmaCare:
- To maximize your overall drug coverage;
- To reduce out-of-pocket costs;
- To help offset costs for the Plan, keeping the fees at a lower rate for all students;
- To have the appropriate deductible assigned to you by Fair PharmaCare (students who do not register will automatically be assigned the highest deductible level);
- To have your claims properly coordinated with your AMS/GSS drug plan.
To register for Fair PharmaCare, please visit health.gov.bc.ca/pharmacare/# or call 604-683-7151. Students who are not eligible for Fair PharmaCare can still claim prescription drug expenses under their AMS/GSS Health Plan. Please contact studentcare.net/works for more information at 1-877-795-4421.

Home of the legendary Pit Night on Wednesdays, The Pit continues to be the number one bar on campus and feature student friendly pricing.
In 1968, UBC’s Associate Professor of Zoology David Suzuki declared “What this campus needs is a pub!” He received full support from the AMS President (former Minister of Forests) David Zirnhelt, and between the two of them, the Pit Pub was born….well, sort of. For five years it continued to be operated out of the SUB ballroom on the second floor, much like a beer garden.
In January of 1969, the Ubyssey described the Pit as “a place to relax, eat a sandwich, and talk about the revolution…”.
In the fall of 1971 the most popular beers were Old Style, Uncle Ben’s, Labatt Blue, and Heidelberg. There were complaints about the the price of beer being increased from 35 cents to 40 cents, and talk of adding a jukebox and a colour TV. Everybody wanted hot food and was hoping the Pit could start to provide burgers and fries.
In January of 1973, the Ubyssey reported on plans for building the new Pit Pub in the SUB basement and by April of that year, construction began, with hopes to be in their new home by September of 1973. Unfortunately, there were delays and the new Pit didn’t open officially until November 19, 1973.
And this year, the Pit will celebrate its 36th birthday. The Pit continues to be the number one bar on campus and continues to feature student friendly pricing. You can contact the Pit at 604-822-6511 or for programming and event information, call 604-822-5336.
Watch for:
- Monday night football;
- Select beer for $2.50 per sleeve on Tuesdays;
- Legendary Pit Night on Wednesdays;
- CITR on Thursdays;
- Bands and fundraisers on the weekends;
- Two big screen TVs for our loyal sports enthusiasts, lots of prize giveaways, and, as always, great pub food from the Burger Bar add to the popularity of the Pit Pub.
Pizza made daily by hand from scratch, ranging from traditional favourites to unique creations.
Did you know…
- …that on opening day, in Dec. 1993, Pie R2 sold a dozen pizzas. These days it is not uncommon for the pizza-by-the-slice restaurant to sell over 200 pizzas in a day, and on its busiest day of the year it can sell over 400 pizzas.
- …that the space Pie R2 now occupies was once the location for Travel Cuts.
- …that the pizzas are made fresh daily. Everything from the dough to the toppings is prepared fresh in house by student staff.
- …that Pie R2 offers a range of pizza options including your standard pepperoni and Hawaiian pizzas to the more exotic baked potato ‘n bacon and teriyaki chicken varieties.
- …that Pie R2 has tried many different combinations of flavours, some that have become mainstays like the ever popular ‘Pepper Potato Vegetarian’ and ‘Roasted Mushroom and Gouda’ where others that gone the way of the Dodo like the not-so-popular ‘Spinach and Clam’ or ‘Apple, Ham and cheddar’.
- …that Pie R2 can fill members with upwards of 15 people working in the store at a time preparing their popular pizza selections.
- …that Pie R2 grosses over three-quarters of a million dollars in sales on an annual basis.
- …that the store has consistently been named as one of the best pizza-by-the-slice restaurants in the city by both Vancouver.com and the Georgia Straight.
- … that Pie R2 can meet your party needs, and can accommodate large orders for any event. If Pie R2 can be of service to your large event, or you would simply like to order a couple of pizzas, give us a call at 604-822-4396.

Bernoulli’s Bagels serves genuine Montreal-style bagels. We make them the traditional way using pure, high-quality ingredients, fresh yeast, and never add preservatives.
Our Sandwiches and Melts
Like our bagels, our sandwiches and bagel melts are made using only the highest quality ingredients: Black Forest ham, Abruzzo salami, and real smoked turkey breast. We order in fresh produce daily and grill or roast our eggplant, peppers, fennel, and onions, etc., in-house. Our condiments are all made from scratch.We use one kind of cream cheese: Philadelphia brand, regular or light. It costs more than other cream cheese, but hey… our bagels deserve the best. Our flavoured cream cheeses are made on the premises with fresh ingredients.
Compliment any bagel sandwich with a hot bowl of soup or a glass of freshly squeezed vegetable or citrus juice. Carrot-ginger, Macintosh apple, celery and beet, orange, and grapefruit are just a few of the combinations you can try! Or try a frosty iced cappuccino or tropical fruit slushee.
Our Philosophy
At Bernoulli’s Bagels, we have a strong commitment to fresh, wholesome, quality ingredients, friendly service, competitive pricing, and sustainability. We compost much of our vegetable waste, recycle all of our waste paper and cardboard, and try to source our products locally wherever possible. We understand the necessity of providing take-out containers, but please remember that we offer discount incentives when you bring your own mug or reusable containers or bowl.We hope you enjoy your Bernoulli’s experience. We believe in our product and stand by our commitment to customer satisfaction. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact us at foodbevmgr@ams.ubc.ca
About Bernoulli’s Bagels
Our bagels are made on the premises and are kettle boiled in honey water and baked on a clay-bottomed rotary oven to create that authentic chewy top crust and slightly crispy bottom. This is why they taste like bagels and not buns with holes in the middle.Every bagel is weighed to ensure consistency, but our bagels are hand-rolled. If you find some bagels slightly irregular in shape, that’s why! After all, our bakers are only human.
We bake our bagels fresh throughout the day. Your bagel will never be more than a few hours from the oven.
Vegan and Vegetarian Items
Some of the more popular vegetarian items at Bernoulli’s (besides the bagels) are:
- Money’s Garden Bagel Burger;
- The Four Cheese and Tomato Bagel Melt;
- Mediterranean Bagel Melt;
- Veggie Bagel with cream cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers on your choice of bagel.
Grab and Go
- Pizza Pretzels;
- Squeelers;
- Calzones.
New Items
- Fruit Danish;
- Apple Turnovers;
- Croissants.
And we are adding more varieties of whole grain bagels. The new favourite is the Whole-Wheat Sesame. But the most popular bagel melt by far is the Four-Cheese and Tomato – a customer favourite!

The AMS Food and Beverage Department hires approximately 275 employees annually and spends over $1 million in student wages. Like all AMS businesses, the department is entirely self-supporting and contributes all net profits back into the society.
Through the AMS, UBC students own and operate several businesses which provide employment for over 400 students and pay approximately $2 million in student wages. Some of these businesses include those that cater to your munchies needs.
The AMS is directed by a five-member group of student executives, elected annually by UBC students.
As one of the best students’ associations around, the AMS requires strong leadership, swift and decisive action, a nose for problem solving, and a firm grasp on the democratic process.
Naturally, who better to fill this role than students? Students are trained learners, able to adapt to every situation, to work for consensus under a deadline, and to party hard and still ace a midterm the next day.
The AMS executive are, indeed, students. They run your multimillion dollar student organization, and manage the hundreds of things the AMS does on a daily basis. They are also the students that represent you to the University, so take it upon yourself to get to know them.
In addition to five elected members, the Executive Committee includes an executive coordinator for student services, who oversees all AMS service groups
AMS Council is the highest elected decision making body of the AMS. The Council is comprised of executive and members from all constituent societies.
The Students’ Council is the ultimate authority in the AMS. From setting policy to determining budgets, Students’ Council determines the AMS’ priorities and activities. Whereas the AMS Executive administers the operations of the AMS, it is the Students’ Council that determines the overall direction of the Society each year.
Any student can run for the Students’ Council. The AMS relies upon active, interested students to help guide its actions. Elections are held in the spring each year; if you want to make a difference on campus, becoming a student councillor is a great way to do it!
We offer professional communications consulting and design services to AMS clubs, student groups, and external clients at a very competitive rate.
We offer professional communications consulting and design services to the entire Society, including AMS Exec, Services, Events, businesses, clubs, groups, or constituencies.
The AMS Communications and Design Services Department offers a number of professional graphic design services, such as promotional materials (e.g. posters, rave cards, brochures, banners, etc.), logos, and consultation at a very competitive rate. Our mandate is student focused, offering affordable services to student groups (such as AMS clubs, resource groups, and constituencies) that target students at UBC. We are also committed to the AMS’ Lighter Footprint Strategy and use environmentally-friendly materials whenever possible (e.g. FSC paper, bioflex banners, biofoamcore, etc.). Project requests from outside the AMS must be approved by the communications manager.
If you would like to use any services offered by the AMS Design Services, please pick up a Project Request Form from SUB Room 220B.
Please note: AMS Design Services provides services to the Society. Due to our commitment to serving the above clients, we are unable to provide services to individual students, small businesses, or external companies.
