Subsidy
The AMS will subsidize the U-Pass for students who are experiencing financial hardship. The AMS external commission administers the U-Pass Subsidy Fund to qualified students on a case by case basis.
Conditions of Application
- All subsidy applicants must demonstrate some form of financial hardship in all cases (i.e. show proof of a student loan, private loan, or personal debt).
- Applicants must provide adequate proof for their subsidy claim in all cases.
- Applicants accepted in winter term one will continue to be subsidized in winter term two unless they withdraw from classes; however, all winter subsidy recipients must reapply for the summer term.
Types of Subsidies
Successful applicants will be awarded either a full subsidy ($23.75/month) or a half subsidy ($12/month). To ensure that the external commission is able to accurately assess your application, along with financial hardship, other criteria may be taken into consideration such as:- Family obligations (e.g. single parent, sick parents, medical need, etc.);
- Personal requirements (a student with disability who does not qualify for government subsidized transit passes, long or short term disability, inability to adequately use public transit due to scheduling restrictions or employment, need for alternative transportation, etc.);
- Part-time student (seldom uses public transit amd requires financial need; note that if you attend UBC on average one day or less a week you can request a U-Pass exemption instead);
- Commute status (transit commute time from their home would exceed 1.75 hours using public transit; you live in remote locations of the GVRD where transit is not readily accessible).
